２−１. Charlie Parker 完全収集への最短距離

LP の時代、 Parker の演奏は様々な形で無秩序に発売され、その識別は困難を極めた。
(もっともそれ以前、Parker のレコードなんてものが世の中で発売されるなんてこと自体が奇跡に近いような時代もあったが。)
例えば、Dial は複数の会社から発売され、同一
Take でさえ複数の会社から出た。時には、同一曲/同一
Take にさえ異なる曲名がつけられて発売された。購入者は、それを買って自分の耳で確かめるまで、それが本当に自分の求めている曲/Takeであるかを確かめる術はなかった。こうして、コレクターは多くの重複を覚悟して、今日こそは
Parker の新しい Take を入手できる、という期待を持って、高いお金を払って
Parker のレコードを買い求めたのである。正規に録音された
Dial でさえこの状態であるから、Parker の記録の大部分を占める
Air Check や Private Recording に至ってはその混乱振りは想像を絶するものがあった。Parker
の一通りの録音を集めるには、実に、その5倍から10倍の重複を余儀なくされたのである。
LP 時代から徐々に Parker の録音が会社毎にまとめられ始めた。Dial,
Savoy, Verve が辛うじて LP セットとしてまとめられ、それに、当時様々な形で重複して膨大な数の
LP として出されていた Air Check / Private
Recording が Bird Box という 22枚組 の LP
セットとして出され、収集が比較的容易になってきた。しかしこの時点までには世の多くのコレクターは既に重複する膨大な
LP を買わされた後だった。コレクター達は、これらのセットにわずかに含まれている数曲の未発表曲/Takeや自分が持っていない
Take のために、再度大金をはたいてこれらのセットを買わされるはめになったのである
(筆者は Stuffy 1曲のために22枚組の Bird Box
を購入した)。それでもコレクターは、世の中にこれほどの
Parker の録音が発売されるようになったことを隔世の感を持って歓迎したのであった。Dial
の全ての残存 Take が6枚の LP となって世に出た時のコレクターの喜びようは(別の観点での落胆は)大変なものであったことがつい最近のことのように思い出される。
CD 時代に入って、LP に分散収録されていた演奏がある種の基準を持ってまとめられ始めた。正規の録音の内、Dial,
Savoy, Verve は Complete CD set としてまとめられた。レコード会社も
Stash や Philology のような Parker 専門の(とは言えないまでも、Parker
に力を入れている)良心的(?)な会社が Parker
の未発表を中心に、録音を集大成する形で CD
の出版を始めた。Bird Box も CD として再発売された。あの
Benedetti の録音も7枚の CD として世に出た。最近、
Masters of Jazz というフランスの会社が Parker
の全録音を Chronological に発売する、というふれこみで
Parker の全録音の発売を始めて、現在 Vol 4
まで出しているが、これは既発売の音源をまとめただけであり(Parker
の初録音の Solo だけは長時間版であるが)、著作権の観点から見れば
Bootleg と同じであり、筆者はこの会社の姿勢には大いに疑問を感じている(コレクターとして、便利さだけを求めるのであれば、歓迎する、ということになろうが)。
現在では、全ての Parker の記録は基本的に
CD で入手可能である。わずかな例外は、CD には不完全版が入っているが
LP には長時間版が入っている曲が1曲あることである。Paris
録音の Farewell Blues である。これについては後述するが、実用上は
CD で差し支えない範囲と思う。もう1曲、1952年
Washington DC 録音については、 LP (VGM0009)
のうちの1曲、Cool Blues が Bird Box 及びその後の
CD にも収録されていない。CD Royal Jazz RJD
505 "More Unissued" Vol. 1 の Cool
Blues とは異なるものである。これについても後述。
CD においてもある程度の重複は覚悟せざるを得ないが、前述のような集大成により
LP 時代とは比較にならない程度であり、Parker
の完全収集を目指す人にとっては覚悟せざるを得ない範囲の重複と思う。
Charlie Parker の記録された全録音の内、かつて何らかの形で商業的に世の中に出されたことのある全録音は、下記の
CD/LP を集めることにより入手できる。
筆者はこれらの全曲を Chronological に MD
に収めている。ただし、Savoy, Dial, Verve,
Royal Roost Live 及び Benedetti Box は Chronological
ではなく、アルバム単位に MD に収めてある。これらは
CD から Digital に MD にダビングしたものである。余談になるが、この作業を通して
MD の利便性を身をもって感じ、今ではカセットなど使う気にもならない程である。

CD set and LP set are the same contents,
though the linernotes in LP set was deluxe
and useful while CD liner was discographical
data only. 18 CD set was once issued in Japan
as 'Complete Perfect Charlie Parker' (what
a title!) with the linernotes copy from LP
set.
3) "Charlie Parker on Dial" (Spotlite,
UK) or "Charlie Parker : The Complete
Dial Sessions" (Stash, USA) 4 CD set
including whole Chuck Kopely Sessions
In Japan, 'The Complete Dial Recordings'
(10 CD Set, Toshiba/EMI) contains complete
Charlie Parker Dial materials including Chuck
Kopely Sessions and Comet Session. It also
includes other players' Dial recordings completely
except leased or purchased third party sessions.
Or 4 CD set 'Charlie Parker on Dial Completed'
(Toshiba/EMI), except Chuck Kopely Sessions
(which were partially included as a bonus
mini CD in the first edition.).
4) "Charlie Parker : The Complete Savoy
Studio Sessions" (King, Japan or Savoy,

Carnegie Hall Session and '50 Chicago Pershing
Ballroom Session.
*) Whole Savoy CDs were also issued in Japan
and Italy as 8 CD set titled "Charlie
Parker on Savoy Years, Complete Editions".
This set includes above Studio 3 CD set,
4 Roost CDs and a Third Party CD.
Once Denon Japan issued similar Savoy set
(8 CD set). Denon said they came from original
Savoy disk masters. But it was something
strange and confusing. Studio sessions were
not complete, missing some alternate takes
which were included in USA Savoy Jazz and
King in Japan. And further, the master take
of "Now's the Time" was included
twice in the set describing that they were
included in the original disk master as different
masters. Listening them, they were the same.
Also similar cases in others tunes.........
why? Please someone tell me the FACT. Roost
sessions seem to be complete and the same
as other issues, but Third Party CD was not
included in Denon set.
Now Denon is issueing Savoy Parker materials
in the same STUPID way as they were issued
in the original albums by old Savoy USA.
Please someone tell Denon to issue all Savoy
materials also all Guild/Musicraft Sessions.
